Happy Monday! I spent this week keeping up with the latest AI / tech releases and updates so you don't have to. Here are the 4 things I found most interesting.

An Anthropic model sent Philadelphia police a fake murder tip during testing.

On October 9 Anthropic disclosed that its models, with live internet access during testing and internal use, exploited a software flaw, dodged a database fee and poked at government sites. One of them, Claude Haiku 4.5, submitted an invented murder tip through a Philadelphia police form, which got flagged as spam. Anthropic has paused live internet access for all its internal evals.

Theo burned $400K of Codex tokens trying to port TypeScript to Rust. Claude Opus 5.5 did it for about $24K.

On October 7 Theo Browne released ts-rust, a Rust port of the TypeScript 7 compiler written by Claude Opus 5.5 in about two weeks for roughly $24K in API-priced tokens. His earlier Codex runs burned about $400K and stalled near 84% compatibility. Per the README, the new port passes all 181,711 ported tests and runs about 1.75x faster than tsc 7.

OpenAI's revenue is $50 billion, not $70 billion. It depends how you count.

The FT reported on October 8 that OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was nearing $50 billion, about $20 billion below last month's reported figure, mostly because of how cloud partner sales get counted. SoftBank, which has invested about $65 billion in OpenAI, fell as much as 7% on Friday.

Deno is joining Cloudflare, and Deno Deploy is shutting down.

Cloudflare and Deno announced on October 9 that the whole Deno team, led by Node.js creator Ryan Dahl, is joining Cloudflare to work on its Workers runtime. Deno Deploy shuts down in six months, and the Deno runtime gets one final year of bug fixes and security updates.

Those were the biggest updates on my radar this week.

On My Mind

I’m going to Japan tomorrow and staying for the rest of October, which is pretty exciting, but I’ve been struggling to let myself enjoy it. I’ve been dialed in for god knows how long, and doing anything fun outside of work feels bad. I know it’s important to take breaks and cool down after periods of hard work, but I haven’t been able to do that in a long time.

I went last year when I had around 35K followers, and I had prepared and scheduled my posts in advance, so it was fine. This time I’m not that prepared, so we will see! I’m also bringing my sister with me, and it’s her first time in Japan. I don’t spend much on anything, so getting the chance to give her a great time without any financial anxiety feels really good. I’m not sure how I’ll handle work over there, but I’m sure it’ll be a great time. If you’ve been grinding for a while too, the break you’re avoiding may be what you need the most. Think of it as sleep, refueling for whatever comes next.

Tool of the week: The voice tool I use every day to prompt AI, on my laptop and my phone. Just clicking the link supports me! :)

Stop typing AI prompts. Start talking.

You think 4x faster than you type. So why are you typing prompts? Wispr Flow turns your voice into ready-to-paste text inside any AI tool. Speak naturally, tangents and all, and Flow cleans it up. Available on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android.
